RIOMAGGIORE ESCAPADE

Riomaggiore is the kind of pretty village everyone likes to admire on postcards, but if it strikes your fancy to actually visit it and taste by yourself those wines people always praise or that cheese that is known for being the best in Italy, please know that Riomaggiore is not that far nor really difficult to reach. Charles and I booked our Easyjet tickets last-minute, arrived in Pisa after 50 minutes of flight and simply got a 1hour30 train to the village – I mean, in terms of time Zurich takes longer to reach from Geneva.
We arrived at Cinque Terre’s picturesque coastline in the afternoon of my 22nd birthday, just in time to enjoy the magical end-of-the-day ambiance and book a table in Riomaggiore’s best restaurant, A Pie De Ma (that I highly recommend for the spectacular view, delicious and affordable food, as well as the nicest staff).
This is fun, because I’m writing these lines in the train back to Pisa (where we will spend 24 hours to discover the city) and even though we left Riomaggiore only a few minutes ago it already feels like a distant memory – a beautiful memory for sure, but something that is far in time nevertheless. This might be due to a fact we noticed while there: the Cinque Terre seem being stuck in time. The beauty of the traditional architecture, the village life that goes on in spite of the massive tourism, the old-fashionned way the restaurants are ran (I nearly forget what my credit card looks like, cash only there!) and the calm that overwhelms you as soon as you step out on the train platform. What year are we again? There is no such thing as years in Riomaggiore, there are only you and that succulent wine. Cheers to that.
