LOOKS AND MINDS

v13a1810

There is a Russian saying I really like : we greet people by their looks, but say farewell by their minds (I believe the english equivalent would be beauty may open the door, but only virtue enters). I remember that back in the years my grand-mother would always tell that one does not need a pretty face to shine – which seemed quite wrong to me as at the time because I was looking up to my neighbor, a girl unfairly beautiful with long blond hair and deep blue eyes. Everything seemed to come very easily to her; a smile could guarantee her free ice-creams, one word and her homework would be done and all the kids wanted to befriend her. I bet we all knew a girl like her, a girl that made us believe that beauty is the ultimate prize, the golden path to a wonderful existence.

But as they say, it’s only opening doors.

Evolving in such a superficial world as the fashion one I got to see a lot of pretty faces that turn out to be empty shells, good enough to hold champagne glasses and smile on photo-calls. But ask them anything that goes further than local gossips and TV series, ask them to explain such-and-such decision of theirs or any basic cultural question and you will loose them and the beauty spell will be broken.

We greet people by their looks, but say farewell by their minds, I came to fully understand this saying only by reaching adulthood, and now I know that while appearance is necessary in the society we’re living in, it is not enough and never will be.
